As an advocate for people with mental health issues in HMP Kilmarnock, I believe advocacy support is crucial for some of our most vulnerable clients. The prison environment can be disempowering, however with our support people can be empowered to have their views heard and rights respected throughout their time in HMP Kilmarnock.

How do we support people in HMP Kilmarnock?
  • Act for them only when and how they choose
  • Find out what they think about things
  • Help them to find out information
  • Help them to contact and liaise with other agencies
  • Help them to understand how the justice system works
  • Healthcare (attend appointments, support with medication issues and complaints)
  • Social Work (attend appointments, support at meetings)
  • Support them to attend meetings (e.g ICM, reviews and Children’s Hearings)
  • Throughcare and pre-release planning

People in prison have the right to:

  • have a say in their lives
  • be safe
  • be empowered
  • be included
